Choose a Softr alternative around the application you need to run. ToolJet is a candidate for governed internal apps over databases and APIs; Glide for operational apps used across desktop and phones; WeWeb for custom web interfaces and code export; Bubble for web and mobile product development; and Zoho Creator for business applications and approval processes.

The right choice for a customer portal is not necessarily the right choice for an employee operations console. This guide separates those needs, gives you practical acceptance tests and explains what to preserve when moving an existing Softr app.

Method: ToolJet publishes this guide. The shortlist is an editorial assessment based on official product sources checked on October 20, 2026, not a hands-on benchmark of all five platforms. Validate plan entitlements and deployment terms for your own workload before purchasing.

Softr alternatives compared by use case

Alternative Shortlist for Main question to resolve
ToolJet Internal apps with database queries, forms and API actions Can the app meet your access, deployment and maintenance requirements?
Glide Day-to-day operational apps across devices Does the actual phone workflow work under your connectivity conditions?
WeWeb Custom web UX and an exportable frontend What must you operate after exporting the application?
Bubble Custom web or mobile products Can your team maintain the data model, workflows and workload costs?
Zoho Creator Business apps and approval processes How well does the app fit your integrations and process ownership?

Treat this as a shortlist, not a ranking from best to worst. A working portal with straightforward requirements may already fit Softr well. A replacement should solve a specific problem that justifies the migration.

What has your Softr app outgrown?

Start by identifying the unmet requirement: a custom interaction, an existing database, a permission boundary, a deployment constraint or the economics of a larger audience. Softr now describes built-in databases, workflows, AI-assisted building and integrations including SQL databases and APIs. It is inaccurate to treat it as only an Airtable frontend.

For a portal, describe who signs in and which organization each person belongs to. For an internal app, identify which systems users need to read or change. For a public product, define branding, navigation and mobile behavior. These details matter more than a generic checklist of components.

Write three acceptance criteria before trials begin. For example: a client can view only its own invoices; a staff member can approve a request without accessing unrelated customer records; and an administrator can disable access promptly. Run those tests in Softr and each finalist.

1. ToolJet: internal apps with control over data and deployment

ToolJet combines an AI App Builder with visual editing, queries and application interactions. It is relevant when a portal-like screen is part of a broader internal process: reviewing a customer account, changing an order or calling an API after approval.

Use existing data through database and API integrations, and evaluate self-hosting when your organization needs to operate the platform on its own infrastructure. Custom business logic and data-access policies still require design and testing.

Plan carefully: Cloud and Self-hosted offerings differ. Workflows and Agent Builder are Self-hosted capabilities. BYOK for LLM credentials is an add-on on both; customer-hosted AI gateways and air-gapped operation require separate Enterprise entitlements. Check the pricing tables for governance, end-user and deployment requirements.

Trial task: build an order-exception queue with a detail page, an approval form and a service API action. Test the same request as an employee, a manager and an unauthorized user. If your main need is a highly customized public-facing product, compare that experience with the product-focused builders below rather than assuming an internal app builder is the best fit.

2. Glide: operational apps for desktop and phone workflows

Glide focuses on business apps and operational data, including field and back-office scenarios. Consider it for workflows such as inspections, inventory updates and team coordination where the interface must work well on a phone.

Trial task: have a real field user open a record, add an attachment, update its status and recover from a connection interruption. Test on the actual devices your team uses. A responsive interface, a native application and offline synchronization are different requirements; get explicit confirmation of each needed capability.

Cost check: request the plan for the intended users, data sources and update volume. Include AI and integration usage where applicable. Do not judge suitability from a small sample app with only the creator signed in.

3. WeWeb: custom web interfaces and code export

WeWeb offers AI-assisted building, visual editing and export of a Vue.js single-page application for self-hosting. It is a relevant candidate when frontend control and a deployment path outside the hosted service are important.

Trial task: reproduce your most demanding portal screen, then test the export path if you expect to use it. Record which backend, authentication, storage and third-party services remain dependencies. Exporting frontend code does not by itself prove that the full application is independent of managed services.

Ownership check: identify who will rebuild, deploy, monitor and update the exported application. Compare the cost of that responsibility with the value of the control it provides. Include keyboard navigation, validation and small-screen behavior in the design review.

4. Bubble: custom web and mobile products

Bubble combines AI prompting and visual editing for web and mobile apps. It is worth evaluating when the project is a customer-facing product with its own workflows, rather than primarily a console over existing operational systems.

Trial task: implement one complete customer journey, including account access, data entry, a failed operation and recovery. Test the most expensive interaction with realistic records and concurrent users. Ask how usage translates into the plan you would purchase.

Your team will still need to understand the application’s data model and business rules after AI generates the first version. For a wider product-development comparison, see our Bubble alternatives guide.

5. Zoho Creator: business apps and approvals

Zoho Creator supports business applications, portals and workflows. Consider it when the project centers on structured forms, approval steps and connections to an existing business-software environment.

Trial task: model a request that moves between two departments, with a rejection path and a delegated approver. Check how non-developers maintain forms and rules, and which changes require someone with deeper platform knowledge.

Ask for the exact licensing treatment of employees, external portal users, integrations and environments. Test required mobile behavior explicitly instead of assuming every desktop workflow has the same capabilities on a phone.

A portal security checklist for every alternative

Test Evidence to require
Customer isolation Two customer identities cannot retrieve each other’s records or files
Role changes Permissions update correctly when a person changes role or leaves
Attachments Private file URLs do not become publicly accessible
Direct requests Authorization holds when users bypass visible controls
Failure handling Retries do not duplicate approvals, payments or record updates
AI assistance Restricted records stay restricted and uncertain answers are identified

Run the tests with separate accounts, not just an administrator using preview mode. Check downloads, search results and exports as well as detail pages. A hidden button or filtered list is not sufficient evidence of server-side authorization.

How to compare costs without misleading user counts

Price a realistic scenario, such as three builders, 25 employees and 500 invited clients with 100 active in a typical month. These are example inputs, not a quote. Ask each vendor whether invited, registered, active, internal and external users are treated differently.

Add data-source requirements, storage, workflow runs, AI usage, environments, support and migration work. Check what happens when the client audience doubles. A low entry price is useful only if that plan includes the permissions and integrations your application needs.

Moving an existing Softr portal safely

Map the application first. Inventory pages, blocks, forms, user groups, data restrictions, domains, workflows, files and connected services. Separate the interface from the underlying system of record so you know what actually needs to move.

Preserve identity and relationships. Decide how users will sign in after migration. Keep stable customer and record identifiers, and map attachment access. Do not assume passwords, permissions or application configuration can be imported into another platform.

Rebuild one complete journey. Start with a useful slice such as a customer viewing and responding to a request. Compare outcomes and denied-access behavior with the original. Keep both implementations available until the business owner accepts the replacement.

Switch deliberately. Update domains, invitations, notification links and scheduled jobs. Prevent both systems from sending duplicate messages or processing the same write. Document the rollback decision and who owns support.

When staying with Softr is the better decision

Keep Softr when it meets the application’s needs and your team can operate it confidently. A plan adjustment, a redesigned data model or a small workflow change may be less disruptive than migration. Choose a replacement because it solves a tested requirement, not because a comparison article promises unlimited flexibility.

If the missing requirement is a governed internal workflow, try a small ToolJet pilot on non-sensitive data. Measure whether the completed task is easier to maintain, safer to operate and worth the transition cost.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Softr alternative?

The best fit depends on the app: ToolJet for governed internal operations, Glide for business workflows across devices, WeWeb for custom web interfaces and export, Bubble for web or mobile products, and Zoho Creator for business processes.

Is Softr only for Airtable apps?

No. Softr now describes its own database, workflows and integrations beyond Airtable, including SQL databases and APIs. Check current capabilities before choosing a replacement based on an older comparison.

Which Softr alternative can I self-host?

ToolJet offers a self-hosted platform. WeWeb describes exportable frontend code that you can host yourself. Those are different deployment models, so verify backend, identity, storage and AI dependencies separately.

Can I migrate my Softr app automatically?

Do not assume a one-click migration. Map pages, user groups, data rules, integrations and workflows, then rebuild and test a representative journey. Data export does not automatically preserve application behavior or permissions.

Which option is cheapest for a client portal?

Compare quotes using the same builders, employees, invited clients and active users. Include required permissions, storage, integrations and usage. The lowest advertised starting price may not cover the production configuration.

Can AI build a secure portal for me?

AI can help create the first version, but the team must validate authorization, data access, file privacy and failure handling. Test with separate user identities before connecting sensitive production data.
